Jamaican born artist, Karl ‘Jerry’ Craig graduated from St. Martin’s school of Art (NDD) in 1957. He obtained his Masters from Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore, USA.
Craig was highly involved in art education in Jamaica and headed the Jamaica School of Art for 10 years, (Now the Edna Manley College of the Visual Arts) where he developed the departments of Fiber Arts, Jewelry, Art Education, History of Art and Photography. Both UNESCO and the OAS recognized and gave several scholarships to students from the Caribbean to attend the school. He was instrumental in obtaining scholarships for several of the graduates to further their art studies in Universities, Colleges, Art Schools and Institutions in the USA, Mexico, Canada, Germany, Italy, Colombia, England and Cuba.
At the University of the West Indies Faculty of Arts and Education , he was Resident Art Adviser and Chief External Examine to all Teacher colleges in Jamaica, Belize Bahamas and the University of Guyana as well as the Burrows School of Art, Guyana. He helped in the planning and developing the curriculum for the Burrows Art School as well as consultant to Curacao in the development of their secondary school curriculum.
He has been used extensively as Consultant for Art and Craft by UNESCO and OAS in the Caribbean and represented Jamaica at several conferences and State Visits, and delivered many papers at international meetings and Universities.
Craig is a very prolific artist and has done many one man exhibitions in England, USA and Jamaica. He has also exhibited in many group shows in Canada, Europe, Latin American Countries, Japan, Hong Kong, the Caribbean, Mexico, Republic of Dominica , Cuba and Botswana. His work is highly desired and is included in many public and private collections worldwide.
Craig masters his canvases with the dexterous use of symbolism and colors garnered from the multiple cultures and natural environment of the Caribbean, Africa and the Orient. He works in oil, acrylic , mixed- media and incorporates 3D elements in his masterpieces.
