Exercise and stretching

Many of the injuries that I see in my office stem from a lack of flexibility which results in poor body mechanics and posture or the lack of adequate tone to support weight bearing joints such as the knees and the spine. Most people who come in with complaints of low back pain are surprised when I explain to them that their pain can be significantly reduced if they were to incorporate a stretching regime and start toning up their abdominal muscles. In order to gain the most benefit from stretching, individuals should do a short warm-up first and then stretch. A gradual sustained stretch is the goal while avoiding quick and bouncing movements. If you stretch a muscle too quickly, it responds with a strong contraction like a knee jerk reflex which increases tension. Each muscle group should be stretched three times and held for 20 to 30 seconds. The goal for each stretch is to reach a bit further than your last stretch without causing pain. The key is to take your time, flexibility is similar to common life challenging experiences; in the beginning it can be tough but after a while of consistently tackling it you begin to feel a change.

Healthy eating

Eating healthy, much like exercise and stretching involves practice. Often times I find that patients think going on a diet is synonymous with eating healthy. However, they are not one in the same. You don’t have to be on a diet in order to eat healthy. Healthy eating starts with learning new ways to eat which involves a lifestyle change. By adding more fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains and cutting back on foods that have a lot of fat, salt, and sugar patients can introduce themselves to creating a new relationship with food. This new way of eating allows individuals to learn about balance, variety and moderation while still enjoying some of their favorite dishes. Further, healthy eating is one of the best things you can do to prevent and control many health problems, such as: heart disease; high blood pressure; type 2 diabetes and some types of cancer.

 

Managing Stress

 

Stress can hit you when you least expect it—before a test, during times spent on the job, because of financial woes, or after an accident. I typically see a number of patients who are battling stressful circumstances on a regular basis. And while everyone experiences stress at times, a prolonged bout of it can affect your health and ability to cope with life. Stress has been known to be a major contributor to a myriad of health related issues such as: heart problems, stomach ulcers, and severe tension headaches or migraines. Managing stress involves getting plenty of sleep, exercising regularly and knowing when to give yourself a break (i.e. getting therapeutic massages). I frequently have conversations with patients about the importance of reducing stress and often point out that it’s better to start the day off completely void of stress. This may mean going to bed a little earlier the night before; taking thirty minutes in the morning to sit quietly in a room; or maybe simply taking time to say a prayer. Whatever it is, finding healthy ways to relax and avoid stress is crucial to living a healthy life.

 

Periodic Adjustments

 

Finally, receiving chiropractic adjustments is probably one of the simplest yet most overlooked ways of maintaining your health. When you receive an adjustment, a specific force in a precise direction is applied to the area /joints that is fixated (or “locked up”).
